INDIE AUTHOR - STRATEGY

  • Genre

Genre choice is a big one for indie authors. You won’t have the power, money, and muscle of the big publishers for your book launch and marketing, so if there’s no market (or a small market) for your crossover, experimental dinosaur romance fiction, then, really, who’s it for?

That’s not to say you shouldn’t write what you love, it’s just that you need to maximise your chances of successful publishing and sales by considering the market before you embark on the long, arduous (and sometimes expensive) journey of self publishing a book.

Fear not, there are ways and means to assess the market potential, and help you decide whether your dinosaur romance is the next big thing, or yesterday’s fad.

  • Series or Standalone?

We are back to that lack of big corporate marketing muscle again. What is it readers want from indie authors? Is it a 400 page standalone print book for £29.99? Or is it a 99p eBook first in series of 6 books they can devour? That £29.99 tome would be a difficult sell for most publishers, and near on impossible for the little indie.

Where is it that indie authors outmanoeuvre the traditional publishers? It’s in their agility, flexibility, ability to rapidly publish and release books to a market hungry for series genre fiction.

Click below for some guidance on the merits of series fiction over standalone indie fiction, and the options of rapid release (write three before releasing number 1).
