The Goldfinch 6 Week Getting Published Course content

In six 90 minute face to face sessions at Goldfinch, surrounded by books, we will cover:

  1. How traditional publishing works, the stages of bringing a book to publication, gatekeepers and how to get past them.

  2. Agent submissions, using the Writers and Artists Yearbook, researching the perfect agent, agent letters.

  3. Cover letters, writing a synopsis, honing and crafting your work.

  4. Writing competitions, societies and groups, social media and how to use it.

  5. Blurbs and comparisons, elevator pitches and the best writing resources.

  6. Practising pitching, group presentations, mock agent interviews.


Who is it for?

This course is an introduction to the world of traditional publishing. It sets out to explain some of the mysteries surrounding the publishing industry, and will help you to navigate the often confusing paths into the industry. It will NOT guarantee your work will be published, but you will be taking a sensible step in the right direction.

What else do I need to know

  • Course dates are not yet finalised but will be in the first quarter of 2023

  • Course face to face sessions will be one evening a week (90mins) for 6 weeks, held in the Goldfinch bookshop on nights when the bar is closed to the public so we will have space and quiet.

  • Course fee is £150 per delegate payable in advance of the first session.

  • Access to the online zone will be through password login for members only.

  • Membership is automatic on purchasing the course.

  • Free tea and coffee for delegates on course nights!


Who is the tutor?

Lou Morrish is a published author and librarian. Her debut novel, Operation Moonlight, won the 2019 Penguin Random House First Novel competition. She is a graduate of the Faber Academy Write a Novel course, and is a member of the Hampshire Writers’ Society, the Historical Writers’ Association, the Society of Authors, and the Romantic Novelists Association. She has been writing for more than two decades.

Please attach or send a link to your work (or provide a bit of a bio) so we can see what stage you are at (we want to make sure that the 8 to 10 delegates on the course are at the right stage to get the most from the modules, from the tutor, and from each other). Once we have 8 delegates, we will finalise dates and schedule the course.
