Writing narration for film: an experimental workshop

Writing Narration for Film - an experimental workshop

A narrator's voice can put a spell on a film. It can change our perspective by adding unexpected information, it can be used to narrate a protagonist's inner thoughts, or it can even make us doubt what we are seeing is true. In both fiction and documentary filmmaking, it brings myriad possibilities to storytelling.

At this informal workshop we hope to bring people who enjoy writing together with the creative goldmine of writing narration for film, in the hope that it can bring fresh perspectives to each person's own creative development.

Who's it for?

Anyone who is already interested in writing and filmmaking, and who enjoys experimenting new perspectives in the hope of finding fresh inspiration for their 'creative writing voice'. Beginners are welcome.

What happens at this workshop?

The workshop facilitator will bring specific storytelling ideas to the group discussion and accompany them with the screening of short excerpts from different types of films (experimental, drama, documentary). Most importantly, we will all be set short tasks to try these ideas out on our own during the time of the session. In general, we are trying to use film imagery as a creative prompt for our writing.

Who is the workshop facilitator?

Julio Molina is Senior Lecturer in Film Production at the University of Winchester. With industry experience in creative documentary filmmaking and sound for film, originally from the Americas, Julio now focuses on fostering and participating in creative communities.

How to join?

Spaces are limited! This is an introductory and experimental workshop, so anyone with a strong interest in writing and filmmaking, at any level of experience, is welcome. All you need is something to write with. Send expressions of interest to julio.molina@winchester.ac.uk with a line or two about why you would like to participate.
